The Humane Society of Coleman County formed in October 2003, incorporated in December 2003 and received its 501(c)(3) charitable determination in May 2004. Our primary mission is to provide affordable spay/neuter vouchers for low-income families in our area. We do not have a shelter.
Our organization is run by volunteers. We have a 7-member board that meets once a month on the first Wednesday of the month at 2:00 p.m., 3rd floor, Coleman County State Bank Building.
Although our primary mission focuses on spay/neuter, we also rescue adoptable dogs and a few cats for re-homing. Please check out our Available Pets for what we have in our foster program and our Happy Tails page for our successes.
.In 2007 the Coleman County State Bank agreed to let the Humane Society use a vacant building the bank owned in the downtown area to start a thrift store to help support the discounted spay/neuter program. We quickly found that a thrift store was going to be a popular idea and a great way to fund our projects, particularly the spay/neuter program. But, that was only the beginning! We were donated two larger downtown buildings that we now own free and clear. We had to spend a pretty penny getting the buildings in shape to occupy, but the Humane Society Thrift Store now calls 108-110 East Pecan its permanent home, and we are one of the busiest locations in town. Visit us soon!
Most recently, in early 2012 we purchased kennels for our rescued dogs and for boarding of dogs. It is not a “shelter,” but rather a temporary home for those rescue dogs that we do not yet have a foster home or a forever home for, plus we have reserved part of the kennels for boarding.
