Dear Friend:
Our 2009 Membership Drive is underway!
The Humane Society of Coleman County is entering its 6th year. We believe we have much to show for the fledgling effort that began in October 2003. Jo Ann Eddleman, as the founding member, was quickly joined by Linda Laws and Jody Guthrie. With these initial directors, the Society’s Articles of Incorporation were filed in December 2003. By May 2004, the Humane Society had received its letter of determination from the IRS, designating the Society as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization eligible for tax-exempt donations. We were off and running! Jo Ann and Linda are still on the board, and have been joined by Nelda Copley, Sue Frizzell and Louanne McAnally.
Our primary mission, as set forth in our Articles of Incorporation, is to support “animal welfare causes in the county of Coleman, specifically but not limited to the controlling of pet overpopulation in the county through a spay-neuter program and the promoting of the humane treatment of domesticated animals through public education and placement of companion animals in need of a home.”
In this first five years the Society has assisted low-income families with the expense of over 500 spay/neuters for their family cat or dog at an approximate cost of $25,000. We have also rescued and placed as many dogs in new homes (and even a few cats).
The adoption fees cover the care and vet work we give rescued dogs. But how has the Humane Society paid for the spay/neuter program? It has been through the kind donations from you—our friends and fellow animal lovers—and through the generous grant gifts we have received from our local Coleman County foundations. And not only your monetary donations! Since the establishment of our Humane Society Thrift Store in November 2007, your donations have included an unbelievable amount of resale items, ranging from sofas and chairs to sets of dishes. Thanks to this outpouring, our thrift store at 109 West Pecan is now our financial mainstay.
Please JOIN US for this next leg of our journey as we expect to double the number of spay/neuters over the next five years with an expanded spay/neuter program that will make it easier for even more families who need help with the expense of altering their pets.
Sincerely,
Humane Society Board of Directors
